**My father, Paul McNeil, a retired Colonel, USMC, passed away on July 4th, 2013. An honorable soldier, this song will honor him as my Home Page, until he is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. So many WWII vets are passing, his ceremony there, with full military honors, will be later this year. Semper Fi, Colonel !
As my daughter Erin was videotaping his history for the family a few years ago, I heard some new details. He was a Marine in the Pacific in WWII, for 2 1/2 years. (Also a combat vet in Korea and Vietnam). I hadn't realized it was that long. I had heard that Mom wrote him everyday. I thought that was an exaggeration. But I could see as he was being filmed, it was true. Every day. Even if only a sentence. But everyday. They got mail late, very late, and in big batches. He would open the letters, often dozens at a time. And he would read the words sent from her Distant Heart to his. That story inspired this song, about their Distant Hearts. And to all who serve, and are distant from the ones they love.
